Podcasting and Vodcasting

Podcasting and Vodcasting are a phenomenon whch has grown out of the Social Media movement online. Podcasts (audio based programs on demand) and Vodcasts (video based broadcasts on demand) are no different from a normal video/audio file which a person can watch on teachertube.com or youtube.com. The primary difference is the fact that a single podcast is one episode in series of podcasts, usually with the same theme. They are primarily delivered via RSS feed to make downloading and following of a specific broadcast much easier on the people interested in the program.

Web-based solutions for creating podcasts and vodcasts have improved in recent years. Even with this improvement, these programs cannot come close to the power available with locally installed programs like Audacity, Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Premiere and Apple's iMovie.

Audacity is a open-source, multitrack digital recording/edition program which turns your computer into a powerful audio recording station. This program has many of the same features as high-priced, professional audio editing programs. It is capable of working with several different audio formats, using a multitude of plugs which gives you the ability to change the sound in several different ways and even gives a user the ability to manipulate the audio to synchronize it with a video. Although most people will not use all of the features included in Audacity, it is an effective tool for easily creating podcasts.

Microsoft Movie Maker and Adobe Premiere (cross-platform) and Apple's iMovie are all locally installed programs with a great deal of power for editing vodcasts. All of these programs are designed for recording and editing digital video into a final product to be burned to a cd/dvd or hosted online via video hosting sites like youtube.com or to be available for download as part of a vodcast. Each program gives the user the ability to add credits, transitions, limited audio and video correction tools. Any of these tools give a person the ability to, with proper planning, easily create professional level videos or vodcasts.

Zamzar.com and mediaconverter.com are website developed to overcome some of the limitations in the in the the video editing software listed above. While these programs are powerful, they are limited by the number of file types they can work with. Zamzar and mediaconverter.com are online, free to use websites which can convert any movie file type to any other movie file type. For example, a family records their vacation to the beach on their digital camcorder. Once they return home, they transfer the video to their computer and try to load it into Windows Movie Maker to create a movie. Unfortunately, the file type the digital camcorder uses is .mov (Apple Quicktime) and Windows Movie Maker cannot read/edit these files. The family only has to upload the file to either of these sites, ask the site to convert the file from .mov to .wmm (Windows Media) and after waiting a period of time for the conversion process, can easily download the converted file and edit it in Windows Movie Maker. These websites allow anyone interested in creating movies or vodcasts the ability to use any personal digital video camera to record their video and edit it in any program they choose to use.

Creating a podcast is very simple and can even be created out of videos which are already created. As an example, take the video which is listed under the social media section. As you can see, this video was created for a college level music appreciation class which was covering the instruments of the orchestra. By itself, the video is just a video hosted on a video hosting website. If the teacher continued to create a new movie featuring a different section of the orchestra each week and made them available for download, they it would be considered a podcast.
